Robert C. Webber was an American inventor who came up with the concept for a ground-source heat pump while he experimented with freezing. He accidentally burned his hands when he touched the cooling system’s outlet pipes. So he decided to reverse the mechanics. He connected the outlet pipes from a refrigerator to a water heater, and because the fridge was constantly producing excess heat, he attached the heated water into a loop.
Webber then used a small blower to push the warm air into the building. He built a heat pump for his home after he realised that his invention worked. Copper tubing was buried with freon gas pumped through, capturing the heat from the earth. Gas was condensed and heated in the cellar. The gas was then forced through the coil into the ground to pick up a new load.
